Project history

According to the National Recreation & Park Association, 55% of local agencies provide at least one dog park. The City of Santa Ana’s Parks Master Plan (adopted May 2022) also identified a dog park as a community need, supported by public input gathered during outreach efforts.

During the pandemic, pet adoptions increased, further highlighting the lack of available dog-friendly open space in Santa Ana—a densely populated city with many residents living in high-density housing. With no dog park currently in Santa Ana or central Orange County, the City began planning a new facility. A yearlong concept design process included three well-attended on-site design charrettes, where residents and their dogs offered feedback. The concept is now complete, and construction plans and specifications are underway.
