Dear Santaneros,

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and joyful holiday season spent with loved ones.

As your Mayor Pro Tem, I remain committed to uplifting the voices of our community and protecting the integrity of Ward 2 and our city. It is critical that we continue investing in our youth, expanding access to resources, and protecting our renters and immigrant community. While ICE remains active in our community, my office will continue providing resources and alerts, and connecting those in need with assistance — please know that you are not alone.

I encourage you to reach out to my office for assistance, questions, or simply to connect. This year, I will be hosting more “Books y Café” meetings as an opportunity to come together and have meaningful conversations right here in Ward 2. Let’s talk about how we can continue building a stronger, more united community.

I look forward to strengthening our partnership with Ward 2 constituents and all Santaneros this year. It takes all of us working together to thrive, support one another, and build on the progress we’ve made — and I’m proud to continue being part of that work with you all.

In Solidarity,

Mayor Pro Tem Vazquez

50-Year Anniversary: Relámpago Del Cielo

Relámpago Del Cielo anniversary

Celebrating 50 Years of Relámpago del Cielo Grupo Folklórico in Santa Ana! Today we honor five decades of passion, culture, and community since 1975, when Rosie Peña and her students from Santa Ana College dreamed big and founded Relámpago del Cielo. What began as a small folklórico group has blossomed into a cornerstone of Orange County’s cultural life. Through dance, music, tradition, and heart they’ve kept the script of México alive, created a true “familia,” uplifted generations of youth, and given voice to heritage art shared proudly across the community.

To the founders, the dancers, instructors, families, and supporters thank you. Here’s to 50 years of honoring our roots, and to many more to come.

15% Drop in Homelessness

Reduced homeless

Santa Ana proved that real progress comes from humanizing people not criminalizing poverty. A 15.4% reduction in unsheltered homelessness. 91 fewer neighbors living on the streets. Veteran homelessness down 29%. Hundreds connected to shelter, housing, treatment, and stability.

This didn’t happen through fear, punishment, or easy political talking points. It happened because we chose dignity over demonization and solutions over scare tactics. Too many politicians run on fear because it is easy, but easy answers are lazy and they rarely solve real problems. Santa Ana chose the harder path: investing in people, building partnerships, extending services, and treating housing insecurity as a humanitarian challenge, not a crime … and it is working. Real safety comes from stability, not citations. Real leadership comes from solutions, not slogans. Santa Ana is showing what’s possible when we lead with compassion and accountability.

Project Kinship Tour

Project Kinship Tour

What an incredible community Project Kinship has built and continues to grow. I had an incredible tour of Project Kinship and was truly inspired by the amazing work they do for members of our community. Project Kinship is more than a nonprofit — they have created a safe, welcoming community space where people feel seen, heard, and genuinely supported. Project Kinship’s programs offer hope, healing, and transformation to individuals affected by incarceration, gang involvement, community violence, and systemic barriers. Some of their programs include:

Youth Programs

Project Kinship provides supportive youth services that uplift and empower young people — including a drop-in Kinship Youth Center where youth can connect, build skills, and participate in activities, restorative circles, and enrichment workshops after school.

Adult Programs

Their adult re-entry programs help individuals transition back into the community following incarceration with intensive case management, housing and shelter linkage, mental health and substance use support, and advocacy services.

Workforce & Re-Entry Support

Project Kinship’s workforce development services connect justice-impacted adults and transitional-aged youth with employment readiness, education pathways, life skills coaching, and supportive one-on-one guidance, helping participants overcome barriers and build meaningful careers.

They also offer additional supportive services — including mental health group circles, restorative practice work, outreach, and more — all rooted in a trauma-informed and healing-centered approach.

Coming Soon / Expanded Services

Project Kinship continues to grow its community impact — with plans such as free tattoo removal for those experiencing employment barriers and the launch of new job training and enterprise initiatives.

Harbor Institute: 5-Year Anniversary

Harbor Institute: 5-Year Anniversary

Congratulations to Harbor Institute on 5 years of success and unwavering community solidarity with our immigrant communities. I was honored to attend as a guest and to speak in recognition of the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) — a grassroots, youth-led organization committed to liberation, justice, and dignity for Palestinians everywhere. I was especially proud that my students created artwork for the representatives, using creativity as a powerful form of expression and solidarity. It was truly an honor to be surrounded by so many impactful people and organizations who deeply care about their communities and are actively working to keep them safe, supported, and equitably just.

Santa Ana Active Streets

Santa Ana Active Streets

Thank you, Dorian Romero, for the invitation to join the Santa Ana Active Streets Christmas Ride & Walk! SAAS continues to show how deeply they care about pedestrian and bike safety in our communities. Thank you for creating a safe and welcoming space for all community members to enjoy the streets of DTSA together. It was a beautiful 1-mile walk along 4th Street, while cyclists took on a 6-mile route, all in the spirit of community, movement, and joy. Grateful to be part of such a meaningful and festive community event.

Youth & Government Bill Night

Youth & Government Bill Night

Our youth is the future and it is important we uplift their voices. Thank you, Roman Reyna, for inviting me among other guests to be a part of the panel. It is important we nurture our youth voices and empower them to speak up to make change. They are a part of this community and live the experiences themselves. Providing a safe space and guidance for them to share their thoughts/ideas builds empowerment that anything is possible when we use our minds, hearts, and voices.

Santanerx 101: Chicano History Mural Unveiling

Chicano History Mural

Our Santanero history is rich — rich in culture, resistance, and justice. I am proud to have the opportunity to share this history not only with our community, but in one of my favorite places of all: the classroom.

My students at Valley High School learned about Mexican American history in Santa Ana, from the Citrus War to present-day ICE raids. This mural holds immense power and knowledge — our history matters, and it deserves to be told and brought to light.

As my students spent the summer working on a section of the mural, Santanero history continued unfolding in real time. With ICE raids impacting our community and organizations like the OC Rapid Response Network standing up for our safety and rights, these stories remind us of the collective power we hold.

They also highlight the incredible individuals and organizations — like the Guzman family and the OC Rapid Response Network — who continue to protect our community and ensure our stories are shared, preserved, and honored.

River’s Edge: Otter and Monkeys Habitat Ribbon Cutting

Rivers Edge: Otter and Monkeys Habitat Ribbon Cutting

The Santa Ana Zoo has been putting its heart and soul into enhancing the visitor experience while maintaining exceptional standards of animal care and safety, including during wildfire events. That dedication is reflected in everything they do — from daily operations to major improvements like the opening of the new otter exhibit.

The zoo’s commitment to excellence is also demonstrated through its ongoing accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the global gold standard for modern zoos and aquariums. This level of care, innovation, and responsibility allows the Santa Ana Zoo to continue growing, thriving, and creating engaging, enriching habitats — like the new otter and monkeys exhibit — for both animals and guests to enjoy.

LibroMobile

LibroMobile Arts Cooperative is a small sized, hybrid nonprofit organization established in 2016 by local author Sarah Rafael Garcia in Santa Ana, CA. Beginning as a mobile, curbside bookstore, LMAC hosted free literary readings and workshops through partnerships with local businesses, arts organizations, and national grants. Since 2017, LMAC has operated from multiple brick-and-mortar spaces while remaining mobile, reinvesting profits into local artists, youth, and writers of color.

In 2022, LMAC relocated to a storefront near one of Santa Ana’s last indoor swap meets, continuing its mission of “cultivating diversity through literature and the arts.” Today, LMAC focuses on audience engagement, placemaking, and book sales while expanding its reach as a BIPOC-led cultural center in Orange County.
