Councilmember Hernandez Newsletter header

Dear Ward 5 neighbors,

Summer is almost here! I’m excited to share our May 2025 newsletter. Our city continues to make significant strides in enhancing public safety and improving daily life for all Santa Ana residents. From the recently completed Fremont Elementary and Spurgeon Safe Routes to School project to our ongoing Green Spaces initiatives, we’re committed to creating neighborhoods where families can thrive safely and comfortably.

This month, we’re highlighting the Alex Odeh Memorial Statue and offering resources for arts education, including several local organizations where you and your family can explore your creativity. Our community calendar is also packed with events! Be sure to check them out below.

Showcasing the best of Santa Ana, I’m proud to announce our city has received the Excellence in Wellness Award 2025 and the Carmen Ramirez Award for Equity for our Environmental Justice initiatives. Don’t forget to download the mySantaAna app to stay connected.

Your councilmember and neighbor,

Johnathan Ryan Hernandez

Building Community through the Arts

Community Art Feature:

Alex Odeh Memorial Statue

Photo of a statue

Khalil Bendib created the Alex Odeh Memorial Statue in 1994 in honor of the Palestinian activist who was assassinated in a bombing as he opened the door of his office at 1905 E. 17th St., Santa Ana. Odeh’s death is considered to have been the culmination of the “Los Angeles Intifada,” in which a series of terrorist attacks were carried out against Palestinian-American activists and institutions in the 1970s. Born into a Palestinian Christian family in Jifna, Palestine, Odeh immigrated to the United States in 1972. He was a lecturer and poet who became the West Coast regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC).

Bendib’s sculpture is dedicated to Odeh’s memory and legacy. The sculpture is a larger-than-life-size representation of Odeh, sitting above the onlooker on a pedestal, with a book in his right hand and a dove in his left hand. Through these symbols, the sculpture wants to emphasize Odeh’s legacy in the letters, education, and peace. As we are in a time where Palestinian lives are being decimated, I want to highlight this statue and the impact a Palestinian-American has made in our local community.

Bridging the G.A.P: Graffiti Arts Programs

Monday, May 19, marked a special occasion as the final mural from our Bridging the G.A.P.: Graffiti Arts Program was unveiled! Our Arts & Culture Office, in collaboration with SAUSD, provided a five-part workshop series to students from Lorin Griset Academy and Cesar E. Chavez High School.

This program introduced students to professional mural arts skills and business practices, fostering creative expression and valuable career-ready skills. The vibrant new mural, located on the top floor of the City’s garage at 420 N. Main St., stands as a testament to the talent and hard work of these dedicated students.
