In light of recent federal immigration enforcement actions, members of our community have exercised their constitutional right to assemble and express their views through peaceful demonstrations.
Over the past week, the vast majority of demonstrators have exercised these rights peacefully, and we thank them for doing so. We encourage all who participate to continue demonstrating in a peaceful and respectful manner.
Local law enforcement agencies have mobilized in response — the Santa Ana Police Department will be present to support the well-being, safety, and constitutional rights of everyone involved.
The right to peaceful demonstration is a cornerstone of our democracy and must be exercised responsibly. Violence or the destruction of property undermines both public safety and the very freedoms we seek to protect.
We encourage everyone to continue exercising their First Amendment rights — with unity and purpose, and without resorting to violence or fear. Peaceful demonstration is both powerful and necessary. Law enforcement will continue to serve the public with professionalism, restraint, and a strong commitment to upholding constitutional protections for all.
Peaceful Assembly
Gathering in public spaces, marching, chanting, holding signs, speaking or rallying, and following the law and not endangering others.
Unlawful Assembly
When demonstrations escalate into violence — including the use of rocks, bottles, mortars, or fireworks against public safety personnel and other demonstrators, reckless driving, or destruction of property — it is no longer considered lawful assembly and becomes a violation of the law.
A Reminder
City of Santa Ana Police Department is not and will not assist with federal immigration enforcement in compliance with the California Values Act.
