Memorial Park Aquatics Facility Honored by AIAOC

The City of Santa Ana, in partnership with ELS Architecture and Urban Planning, is proud to announce that the new Memorial Park Aquatics Facility, currently under construction, has received a Design Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects, Orange County Chapter (AIAOC).

The AIAOC Design Awards celebrate exceptional and innovative architectural achievements in Orange County’s built environment. Following the lead of the National AIA, AIAOC recognizes excellence in architecture that embodies the ten principles of the AIA Framework for Design Excellence: Design for Integration, Equitable Communities, Ecosystems, Water, Economy, Energy, Wellness, Resources and Change and Discovery.

For more than 70 years, Santa Ana’s Memorial Park pool has been a cherished community gathering place, set among expansive green space and heritage trees. Now, after decades of use, the original pool and bathhouse are being replaced with a modern, all-electric aquatic center that will provide state-of-the-art recreational and competitive facilities.

“Memorial Park is an essential part of Santa Ana’s recreational and cultural history,” said Mayor Valerie Amezcua. “This award recognizes not only the outstanding design of the new facility, but also the City’s commitment to creating sustainable, inclusive spaces where future generations can gather, compete and thrive.”

The new design includes two distinct pools: a “fun-water” recreational pool and a  competition pool for water sports. The project is part of a two-phase master plan reimagining the park’s eight-acre east side, allowing designers to take a holistic approach that balances functionality, sustainability and beauty while preserving the park’s historical and cultural character.

A key feature of the project is the preservation of the “Chicano Gothic” mural painted by Emigdio Vasquez in 1987. The new facility celebrates Santa Ana’s cultural heritage while advancing sustainability by becoming one of the first all-electric aquatic centers in California.

The Memorial Park Aquatics Facility is scheduled for completion in Fall 2026 and will once again serve as a vital neighborhood destination for recreation, competition and community pride. For more information, please visit santa-ana.org/memorial-park-pool-reimagined.
