Lost and Found Animals

Lost Animals

A majority of the animals found in Santa Ana are lost "stray" pets. The animals are either found in the field by one of our officers or brought directly to the shelter by a member of the community. When an animal is found, we first check for a name tag, license tag, and microchip. If the animal has any type of identification, the owner will be contacted. If your pet is microchipped, we will then contact the microchip company to obtain the microchip information. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of these stray animals have identification.

Please make sure the microchip information on file with the microchip company or the animal license is accurate and up to date at all times. If you need to verify your animal's microchip, contact your local veterinary office. The veterinarian should be able to provide you with the brand of chip, its number, and how to verify contact information.

Found Animals

If you have found an animal, you should notify Santa Ana Animal Services at (714) 245-8792, or take it to the Orange County Animal Care Shelter immediately in order to reduce the delay in reuniting pets with their rightful owners.

You can contact Santa Ana Animal Services by leaving a detailed voicemail message or by sending an email to animalservices@santa-ana.org. An on-duty/on-call Animal Services officer will be automatically notified and will contact you as soon as possible regarding the animal. For after-hours emergencies, call the Santa Ana Police Department at (714) 245-8600.

If you are interested in keeping an animal you have found, please advise Santa Ana Animal Services staff members and they will assist you with the process. If the owner is not located, you can apply to adopt the animal. The Orange County Animal Care Cneter has many wonderful animals that need loving homes.
