Artist: Darren Hostetter
Selfies 2, 2021
Location: South West corner of N. Bristol St. and W. Washington Ave intersection
Darren Hostetter’s utility box design takes imagery from a series of paintings and murals the artist began in 2013, which deal with media technology, surveillance, and the end of privacy. Hostetter work is “one-part paranoia and two-parts fascination with the media technology of surveillance,” that raises questions about the consequences of “over-sharing, constant virtual affirmation seeking, selfies, and techno-voyeurism,” as well as surveillance by state and corporate entities and the fantasy of living off-grid.
