Career Criminal Apprehension Unit

The Career Criminal Apprehension Unit identifies, apprehends, and prosecutes career criminals. While individuals and groups fitting the career criminal criteria is the Unit’s mandate, like Regional Narcotics, additional information and intelligence is gathered, which is shared with other enforcement entities. However the distinction here is that investigative information that does not meet the career criminal guidelines is routed to the appropriate investigative units for specific follow-up investigation.

Computer Forensics UnitComputer Forensics Unit

The Computer Forensics Unit (CFU) was established in January 2007 to assist patrol officers and detectives with seizing and examining computers, cellular telephones, digital cameras, and other items containing digital evidence. In 2009 the CFU joined the FBI Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory, which has been involved in over a thousand cases throughout Orange County. Some examinations uncovered the only physical evidence in a case, and sometimes led to identifying additional suspects and crimes. The RCFL also provides digital evidence training and assists with search warrant preparation and service.

Public Safety Realignment Task ForcePublic Safety Realignment Task Force

On October 1, 2011, Assembly Bill 109 (AB 109), also known as the Prison Realignment Act, became effective. As a result, numerous changes occurred in the detention and incarceration of inmates. The intent of the legislation was to reduce recidivism rates of criminal offenders and comply with a U.S. Supreme Court Order reducing the State of California prison population. The supervision and incarceration of low-risk offenders shifted from the State to County Probation Departments. In 2014, there were over 400 offenders residing within the city limits of Santa Ana and under the supervision of the Orange County Probation Department. With funding from the State of California and the County of Orange, the Public Safety Realignment Task Force has focused their efforts of this population in three areas: prevention, intervention and enforcement. The mission of this task force in ensuring public safety has been a collaborative effort that includes two Santa Ana police officers and four Orange County deputy probation officers.

Orange County Cold Case Homicide Task Force (OCHTF)Orange County Cold Case Task Force

During 2014, the Santa Ana Police Department was instrumental in the formation of the Orange County Cold Case Homicide Task Force (OCHTF).Orange County police agencies and the Orange County District Attorney have aggressively and cooperatively pursued the investigation of unsolved homicides for many years. While many cold cases have been solved, over 1,000 unsolved cases remain open. Like many jurisdictions around the state and country, Santa Ana has continued to review cold case homicides as time and staffing allows. History has shown that when concentrated effort is given, previously unsolved cases can be solved and submitted for prosecution. However, budgets, caseloads, and other factors frequently compete with one another for time, resources, and effort. It is the intent of this task force to reduce the number of unsolved homicides through the consistent and coordinated collaborative efforts of experienced homicide investigators, supervisors, analysts, and criminalists. Orange County Homicide Task Force

BadgesThis task force is a collaborative effort between the Santa Ana Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office, as well as other law enforcement agencies throughout Orange County. The task force has already achieved success with the arrest of a suspect in a 1989 brutal stabbing death. The mission of the task force is to investigate and solve the murders in Orange County. The Santa Ana Police Department is the host agency for the task force and will work diligently to seek justice for the homicide victims.
