BASIC PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Keeping Fats, Oils, and Grease Out of Sewers

The City of Santa Ana is the owner of the public sewer system serving your business or home and is required under State laws to institute a comprehensive fats, oils, and grease (FOG) control program. FOG from food service establishments and residences causes sewer line blockages and spills. As FOG hardens in sewer lateral lines and sewer mains, it prevents the sewage stream from passing through and ultimately, causes raw sewage to back up into your business or home. The image to the right was taken inside an 8-inch sewer pipeline and demonstrates how FOG builds up and cause problems.

Sewer spills, as shown here, end up in the storm drain system and waterways and are a significant cause of ocean water pollution. The resulting ocean water pollution results in beach closures and lost revenues for the local businesses, municipalities, and State.

If you witness a sewer spill or see evidence that a spill has occurred, please contact the Public Works Agency at (714) 647-3380.
