Historic Preservation

The Santa Ana Historic Resources Commission was established to recognize and preserve historic structures important to the heritage of the City. In addition to the creation of the Commission, the City Council also created a list of historically significant properties called the "Santa Ana Register of Historical Properties".

When a property is placed on the state or local historic register, the owners may be eligible for a variety of incentives.  Any improvements or alterations to the exterior of the property must meet the Secretary of the Interior Standards for Rehabilitation and will require Historic Resources Commission review for major alterations. Please contact the Planning Division for more detailed information regarding alterations to your historic structure at (714) 667-2700 or email PlanningDepartment@santa-ana.org.

The City of Santa Ana has two National Register Districts: Downtown Santa Ana (listed in 1984) and French Park (listed in 1999).  Besides this National Register listing status, French Park Neighborhood also has zoning protection for its structures called Specific Development 19 (SD-19).

Heninger Park also includes many historic structures.  While not a National Register District, this neighborhood does have zoning protection for its buildings called Specific Development 40 (SD-40)
