Children's Day/Book Day
On Saturday, April 23, 2011, over 1,000 residents attended the 3rd Annual Children’s Day/Book Day Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros event at the Santa Ana Public Library. Many community organizations participated in the event, while visitors took part in raffles, free face painting, balloon animals, science experiments, and were even given free books. This event was partially sponsored by the Friends of the Santa Ana Public Library and the Orange County Chapter of REFORMA. It was a day packed with entertainment and literacy advocacy that welcomed the Santa Ana community to explore the plethora of resources offered by the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services agency.
Since its inception in 2008, this event is one of the library’s biggest celebrations of the year, inviting patrons to celebrate children, families, and literacy. Día continues the tradition of Children’s Day, which began in 1925. Children’s Day sought to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. In 1996, nationally acclaimed children’s author, Pat Mora, founded El día de los Niños/El día de los Libros by linking the celebration of children with the importance of literacy.
