If you are doing individual research and are looking for some online web resources these are a few reliable and helpful web sites.

The Statistical Abstract of the United States:  published since 1878, is the authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States.

The National Archives Genealogy and Family History Page:  provides information on accessing federal records for genealogical information.

The Library of Congress: The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution, and it serves as the research arm of Congress.

Repositories of Primary SourcesA listing of over 5000 websites describing holdings of manuscripts, archives, rare books, historical photographs, and other primary sources.

Online Archives of California (OAC):  provides historical materials from a variety of California institutions, including museums, historical societies, and archives.

The USGenWeb Project: free genealogy websites organized by county and state.

FamilySearch.org: a service sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, includes guides, indexes, and resources. 

Deciphering Old Handwriting:  online tutorial on how to read handwriting from a genealogy course taught by Sabina J. Murray. 

Documenting the History of Your House:  this site suggests several general approaches and tools that can be used to learn more about the history of a house. 

Ellis Island Passenger Search:   allows users to seach ship passenger records and manifests by passenger name.  Images of the ships during the passenger search are also available.
