Santa Ana, YMCA Get in the Swim of Things
July 26 , 2010
The City of Santa Ana is finding new ways to provide more with less. For the second year, the city has teamed up with the YMCA of Central Orange County to allow hundreds of local kids a chance to participate in aquatic sports this summer.
Under the partnership, YMCA staff provides swim lessons and helps coach water polo and swim teams at five city pools. By teaming up with the YMCA, the city is not only able to maintain the summer aquatics program but add to it even in a tough budgetary environment.
The partnership was augmented by a $50,000 grant to the YMCA from the LA 84 Foundation that keeps fees at an affordable level for Santa Ana residents.
“This is just one of the ways that the City of Santa Ana is maintaining key services and programs despite budget cutbacks,” said Vince Sarmiento, Santa Ana City Councilman. “This partnership is part of the new way of doing business for the city’s Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Agency.”
YMCA aquatic programs teach children to be safe around water and provide them with important swim skills. YMCA aquatic programs include parent-child classes, preschool classes, youth, adult, swim teams and water polo. YMCA’s swim and water polo teams compete in regional YMCA leagues give participants a greater competitive edge and prepare them for high school competition.
The LA84 Foundation is endowed with surplus funds from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Its mission is to serve youth through sport and to increase knowledge of sport.
