Additions to the Santa Ana Zoo
February 15 , 2011

The monkey and camel exhibits at the Santa Ana Zoo got some new additions this winter.

Mariah and Lou Lou, dromedary (one hump) camels, got some relief from the sun and rain thanks to a Boy Scout project and a silvery langur (trachypithecus cristatus) baby monkey was born on Feb. 10.

The yet-to-be-named baby is the offspring of Oliver and Daria and the first of the species to be born at the Santa Ana Zoo in Prentice Park, which is well known for its primate area.

The newcomer is bright orange at birth with pale skin in contrast to adults with their grayish coats and darker faces and hands.

Silvery langurs, which can weigh up to 15 pounds,   come from the dense tropical forests of Indonesia and Malaysia where they are considered near threatened. The Santa Ana Zoo has housed silvery langurs since 1984 and holds the longevity record for this species with a female reaching more than 35 years old.

The camels at the zoo now have a shelter from bad weather thanks to Hayden Hall, an Eagle Scout candidate with Troop 36 who oversaw construction of a 12-foot tall, 450-square-foot rain and shade structure that complies with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and U.S. Department of Agriculture requirements.

Hall not only helped to erect the shelter but raised the funds needed to purchase the materials needed to build it.

The Santa Ana Zoo’s newest primate and the camels’ new digs can be seen daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1801 Chestnut Avenue in Santa Ana.  Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and children 3-12 years.  Children under three are free.  For more information call 714-836-4000 or visit www.santaanazoo.org.
