Santa Ana High Student Wins Full-Ride College Scholarship

Aura Carrillo was a model student at Santa Ana High School and a dedicated community volunteer. The 17-year-old dreamed of going to college. But when her father was laid off from his job as an aircraft parts painter about a year ago, that dream started to fade.
But thanks to Gates Millennium Scholarship Program her dream is alive and well. Carrillo was one of 1,000 students in 2010 to win a full-ride college scholarship funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Santa Ana College Ranked Eighteenth in Nation in Awarding Associate Degrees to Minority Students

According to Community College Week, a national publication for two-year college professionals, Santa Ana College ranks 18th among the top 100 associate degree producers for “total minority” students in the nation. The 95-year-old college is one of six California community colleges in the top twenty nationwide in this category and the only Orange County community college among the top-ranking performers.

In California, competition for land is going coastal.
City Ventures LLC, a Santa Ana home builder, said it received a $100 million investment from an affiliate of Ares Management LLC on Tuesday. City Ventures says it will use the money to purchase land and develop new homes in urban, high-density coastal communities such as Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco.

Late yesterday, at a special meeting of the Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) Board of Trustees, the Board voted to appoint Rául Rodríguez, Ph.D., as chancellor of RSCCD, the third largest community college district in California.
New Chapter Begins for Martinez Bookstore in Artists Village

Rueben Martinez Bookstore/Art Gallery will celebrate the grand opening of its new store at 216 N. Broadway in the Artists Village on June 5 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Career College of California is bringing a whole lot of class to Downtown Santa Ana.
The vocational education specialist announced that it is relocating its campus in June from Garry Street to 6,000 square feet on the second floor of the Fiesta Marketplace building at the corner of 4th and Bush streets in Downtown Santa Ana.

Sycamore Lofts Add More Vitality to Downtown Santa Ana, Artist Village

Work has begun on a collection of artists live/work lofts that are helping to accelerate the transformation of Downtown Santa Ana into a vital arts center.
City Ventures said foundations have been laid for 8 of the 16 homes on a half-acre of vacant land at the corner of North Sycamore Street and West 3rd Street, less than a mile from the city’s Metrolink train station and adjacent to the Santa Ana Artists Village.
Wells Fargo Awards $100,000 Technical Assistance Grant to the Orange County SBDC

A $100,000 Wells Fargo grant announced today will allow the Orange County Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to continue providing business consulting and training to Vietnamese small business owners. Santa Ana Steps Up Again to Help Businesses

Nearly 200 businesspeople took advantage of a free seminar sponsored by the City of Santa Ana that helps companies find the capital needed to grow their businesses.
An introduction to Money: Where to Find It and How to Get It was held on April 22 at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. The day-long event attracted 190 businesspeople, including 55 who signed up for the city’s next 100 Day program.
Rare monkey born at Santa Ana Zoo

A rare monkey named Juliet has given birth at the Santa Ana Zoo to a tiny tuft of a baby - her second child with a mate named Romeo.
The baby appears to be healthy, but zookeepers have not gotten close enough to determine whether it's a boy or a girl. Visitors to the zoo might catch a glimpse of it clinging to its mother's back or held close to her chest.

Santa Ana Teaches Business Owners How to Find and Leverage Capital

In January the City of Santa Ana kicked off a 13-week program to help more than 80 business owners reinvigorate their businesses. Helping 100 Businesses for 100 Days was a success that the city has teamed up with OPIS Network again to help companies find the capital to grow their business.
Corinthian Enrolls Downtown Santa Ana for its Newest Campus

Corinthian Colleges Inc., which is based in Santa Ana, plans to open its newest campus this summer in a 4-story, 40,000-square-foot building on 500 W. Santa Ana Blvd.
Forgiveness is Good Business in Santa Ana

Forgiveness, it seems, makes good business sense.
Since enacting a business license tax amnesty program at the beginning of February, the City of Santa Ana has collected more than $500,000 from 1,300 unlicensed businesses that did not report or underreported business tax.
