Santa Ana firefighters are hired from an eligibility list established by an open competitive examination process. Applicants must receive a minimum passing score in every component of the selection process in order to be placed on this list. Once a list is established, it remains in effect for two years or until exhausted. Appointment offers made from this list are contingent upon applicants passing a comprehensive background investigation, which may include a polygraph examination; applicants must also meet all medical/psychological requirements. To compete for a position on the eligible list, applicants must meet the following requirements:
-
Applicants must have successfully completed, or be currently enrolled in, a California State Fire Marshal certified Firefighter I Academy at an accredited college. They may also be required to successfully complete the Santa Ana College Fire Academy Physical Ability Testing process.
-
Applicants must possess and retain a valid California Class C Driver's License as a condition of employment.
-
They must be able to communicate effectively in both English and any one of the following languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Hmong, or other approved language.
-
Applicants must also be willing to work on alternating 24-hour shifts with irregular days off
.
The Fire Department does not maintain a catalog or list of interested applicants, but information regarding upcoming examinations may be obtained from the City of Santa Ana Personnel Department at (714) 647-5340. The Santa Ana Fire Department also maintains a reserve firefighter program for qualified individuals who desire experience in the fire service and are preparing for full-time employment.
