The mission of The Wooden Floor (previously known as Saint Joseph Ballet) is to empower low-income youth from diverse backgrounds to build self esteem, self discipline, and a sense of accomplishment through dance, academic and family programs.

First, the TWF toy drive:  FYER

Each year, we have a number of families at The Wooden Floor who do not have the capacity to give a gift to their children. Our holiday gift drive will culminate during our Annual Holiday Party in the distribution of gifts to students who would otherwise go without during this holiday season. Your efforts during these difficult times will help bring holiday cheer  to over 330 needy children .

Second, Christmas tree decoration:  FLYER

Each year, The Wooden Floor has 8-10 Holiday trees decorating our lobbies and studios to promote a festive atmosphere during the holiday season.  On the last day of class, these trees are then given to our neediest students and families who do not have resources for a tree.  In the past, the trees have been donated by a local organization and the TWF staff have trimmed and decorated them.  This year, we would like to invite you to provide trees and decorations and share in the holiday spirit here at The Wooden Floor by decorating the tree on-site as a team-building activity.

American Red Cross of Orange County

The American Red Cross, Orange County Chapter would like to share with you upcoming Red Cross events and activities. If you are interested in learning more about any of the events and activities listed, please call or email the contact person.

1. Network OC

The American Red Cross of Orange County introduces Network OC, a social young professionals group committed to service and aimed at people who are looking to become involved in their community, meet other people and support one of the world’s most well-respected humanitarian organizations, all while having fun.  Through various events, activities and social gatherings, Network OC offers members a platform for networking with other young professionals and a fun and exciting way to make a difference in their community.  Membership is open to young professionals between the ages of 25 – 39.  For more information please contact Ishell Linares at (714) 481-5366 or ilinares@oc-redcross.org.

2. Safe and Well

Personal preparedness can help keep people safer during an emergency.  Including a family communications plan can also alleviate fear and provide peace of mind. A communication tool that families can integrate into their plan is the Red Cross Safe and Well website, accessed via www.redcross.org or www.oc-redcross.org .  Those without Internet access can dial 866-GET-INFO (866-438-4636) for help registering.  This site allows people affected by disaster to register themselves as “safe and well” by posting standard messages that indicate they are at a shelter, home, or hotel, and will make contact when they are able. Concerned family members and friends who know the person's phone number or a complete home address can search for the posted messages. In addition to bringing peace of mind to those outside of the disaster area, use of this tool helps mitigate congestion of public and cellular telephone lines, and reduces the burden on emergency responders.  For more information locally on Safe and Well please contact Matilde Gabriela, Assistant Director, Disaster and Client Services (714) 481-5327.

3. Community Disaster Education (CDE) Presentation

The presentation provides community groups, families, and individuals basics knowledge on how to prepare, respond and cope with a major disaster. Topics include how to mitigate work area, what to physically do in the event of an earthquake and other disasters, what kind of supplies to have on hand, etc. The presentation can be customized to fit your specific needs and can include home/family preparedness.  To schedule a CDE presentation at your organization, contact Monica Ruzich at (714) 481-5329 or mruzich@oc-redcross.org. To receive a FREE presentation, remember to mention that you obtained the offer from the Community Outreach Office.

4. Disasters Change Lives. You Can Too.

This year, give the gift of a garden.

Sponsoring community gardens in urban neighborhoods.

The Grain Project would like to invite you to give the gift of health and food to a family in need.  The availability of healthy food and exercise within a community that is plagued with obesity, diabetes, and poverty is a challenge.  However, The Grain Project has addressed these issues by creating a cooperative garden at Jerome Park in central Santa Ana.  It is the first of its kind in the city, and the first garden sponsored by the City of Santa Ana.  This strategic location has ensured that healthy food choices and opportunities are made available to those who are most in need of such resources.

With your sponsorship, members from the community will have the opportunity to join our Garden Club, where they can plant, nurture, and harvest local produce that they themselves have grown.  Participating families have enjoyed the dignity, honor, and healthy benefits of growing their own produce.  By sponsoring an individual or a family, you can ensure that more families have access to healthy foods and exercise.  You will also be able to help bring more community gardens to other locations within the city.

Please consider supporting a community gardener for only $50.00 for one year.  This will provide him / her with all of the seeds, garden tools, and equipment necessary to grow a healthy harvest of fruits and vegetables.  Your donation of $100.00 will care for a family of four over the course of one year.  You can sponsor one or more community members by visiting www.grainproject.org, or you can send your donation by mail to The Grain Project, P.O. Box 572, Santa Ana, CA 92702. Donations are tax-deductible.

Cherie and the OC Crazies are hosting an event on Thursday, October 21, 2010, at 5 p.m. to provide information on a new nonprofit organization called the WE Movement. At a time when the government cannot accommodate everyone's needs due to the tough economy, the WE Movement has stepped up as a vital entity to coordinate community resources through an innovative community-based outreach effort that functions through an online "search and match" software program (HELP4U) linking "those that have"--individuals or companies with goods, products and services they wish to offer gratis to "those who do not," the underserved and most fragile among us--as well as to groups or associations in need who could make good use of the donated goods, products or services.

We are reaching out to invite you to this event, and also in hopes that you have contacts for other community resource directors in Orange County and surrounding areas, city officials, nonprofits--anyone you can think of who could benefit from this wonderful community service.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you'd like more information or would like to speak with a WE representative. Visit www.wemovement.org for more information. Flyer

Give your old dust collecting Cell Phones to the American Red Cross of Orange County. 100% of the proceeds go to fueling our life saving services. If you would like to help and are interested in having a small table top collection box placed at your organization or business, please let us know. For more information, contact the Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross at (714) 481-5300.

5. Become A Community Ambassador For Your Red Cross

The American Red Cross is looking for individuals to help the organization outreach to the Orange County community.  The Community Ambassadors helps people prevent, prepared for and respond to emergencies by distributing Red Cross information at community events and fairs. In addition, we are seeking bilingual individuals to outreach to the Latino/Hispanic and Asian Pacific Islander communities.
