Youth Summer Leadership Program

We’ve got a youth summer leadership program that is not your stereotypical summer camp- it is synergy of youth learning and enhancing their leadership skills through experiential activities and sessions. Through the self discovery of who they are and what they stand for they discover their views and roles as it comes to teamwork, societal pressure, communication and leadership styles, while learning about the Red Cross and getting involved with the community. Our summer leadership program consists of two camps each with its own distinct curriculum:

  • Jr. LDC, designed for youth in grades 6-8 (as of March 2009) is hosted as a four day three night (overnight) camp.   Through this program, middle school youth become better prepared for the pressures of high school and the many challenges that come along with growing as an individual. Also, they learn about the multifold value of community service and how they can being volunteering with the Red Cross.

  • LDC (Leadership Development Center) is for youth in grades 9th-11th (as of March 2009) and is hosted as a weeklong (Monday-Friday) overnight camp. Through this program youth emerge from the program with a better sense of themselves and their leadership style as well as building their Red Cross knowledge through camp activities.

  • Both camps are facilitated through the efforts of adult and youth volunteers, as well as Red Cross Youth Services department staff.

To obtain more information about the summer leadership programs, please visit our website link: http://www.oc-redcross.org/show.aspx?mi=2946

Bring a comfy chair or blanket and pack a picnic supper to come enjoy great music on the lawn. The Fabulous Peggie Perkins is an amazing vocalist. From the sultry crooning of a torch singer, to belting out an 80's favorite, this lady's style and ability makes the show! Peggie has a diverse repertoire, including Standards, R & B, Country, Rock and Blues. She performed at the 2007 Salt Lake City Jazz Festival, and continues to do shows around the country. In 2008, she released her first solo CD "At Last" to rave reviews. Her music is receiving major airplay on the Jazz charts, not just here in the US, but in Australia and in England, and is rapidly rising towards the top. Peggie's band is comprised of top shelf studio musicians and performers. Accompanied on Keyboards by Llew Matthews (2 time Grammy Award winner) and a host of other special friends, this show will be one to remember. Every one of Peggie's concerts is an interactive experience that'll have you tapping your toes, singing along, or dancing in the aisles. Big cool fun for a Sunday afternoon at the Zoo. This is not just a concert, though. In addition to the show, several select galleries from the artist districts in Santa Ana will be there showcasing some of their work. Meet and greet the artists as you walk the party area. They'll be there to give a little taste of what you might see at one of the district art walks. The Zoo grounds will be open for you to go exploring, and see the animals at a time when most of the public doesn't get to enjoy them. Animals are also brought out and circulated throughout the show grounds. There is a separate kids area with crafts and other fun stuff. Ride the Zoofari Express train around, and get an early look at the new exhibit, the Tierra de las Pampas, which will be finished later this year. We'll bring dessert for everyone, or stop by the "Las Perlas del Amazonas" restaurant at the zoo for a little something. The concert starts at 5:30pm Admission for this show is $10, $5 for Zoo members, and free to SAZOO Club members. This is the final show in the Santa Ana Zoo's 2009 "Sunset at the Zoo" series. This year, give the gift of a garden.

Sponsoring community gardens in urban neighborhoods.

The Grain Project would like to invite you to give the gift of health and food to a family in need.  The availability of healthy food and exercise within a community that is plagued with obesity, diabetes, and poverty is a challenge.  However, The Grain Project has addressed these issues by creating a cooperative garden at Jerome Park in central Santa Ana.  It is the first of its kind in the city, and the first garden sponsored by the City of Santa Ana.  This strategic location has ensured that healthy food choices and opportunities are made available to those who are most in need of such resources.

With your sponsorship, members from the community will have the opportunity to join our Garden Club, where they can plant, nurture, and harvest local produce that they themselves have grown.  Participating families have enjoyed the dignity, honor, and healthy benefits of growing their own produce.  By sponsoring an individual or a family, you can ensure that more families have access to healthy foods and exercise.  You will also be able to help bring more community gardens to other locations within the city.

Please consider supporting a community gardener for only $50.00 for one year.  This will provide him / her with all of the seeds, garden tools, and equipment necessary to grow a healthy harvest of fruits and vegetables.  Your donation of $100.00 will care for a family of four over the course of one year.  You can sponsor one or more community members by visiting www.grainproject.org, or you can send your donation by mail to The Grain Project, P.O. Box 572, Santa Ana, CA 92702. Donations are tax-deductible.

For more information about the Holiday Garden Gift campaign or about The Grain Project, please contact Lori Christian at lori@grainproject.org or (714)542.9392. FLYER      Combined FLYER
