COPS Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP)

The Santa Ana Police Department was the only law enforcement agency in Orange County to be awarded money under the CHRP. The police department was awarded $6.7 million to hire new police officers. These stimulus funds will allow the police department to hire 18 police officers. The officer's wages and benefits are paid in full for a three year period and require no local matching funds. The first eleven officers have been hired and begin the six month police academy on November 30, 2009 and will graduate in May of 2010. The remaining seven and expected to be hired in 2010. These new officers will be assigned to the Field Operations Bureau to work with residents to address neighborhood concerns and promote crime prevention programs to reduce criminal activity in the community.
Justice Assistance Edward Bryne Grant

The City of Santa Ana received an allocation in Bryne Grant funds for broad-based public safety prevention, intervention, and suppression activities. The Justice Assistance Edward Bryne Grant funds have allowed the police department to hire two lateral police officers to work in the Field Operation Bureau to continue Community Policing efforts and further promote crime prevention programs to ensure a safer Santa Ana. The stimulus funds will cover the officer's wage and benefits for two years and there are no local matching funds required. Those two officers will start November 30 and will be assigned to a Field Training Officer for six months.
